There are a lot of male voice actors in this industry. I remember when I first started to pursue this art, I didn’t know which voice over genre I would really fit into. What was “my voice”?  Which demographic would relate to me? I studied other male voice over talent and went through the vast “rolodex” of online profiles and demos. I studied American male voice actors and European ones, trying to get an idea of how other male voice over artists sounded. After a few years of practicing, studying, discovering and training I can confidently say that I have found my voice and place in this industry.

The Liberty University project was a national campaign entitled “We Are Champions”. The voice over and visuals were urban, raw, real, energetic and diverse. The VO sounds like a natural leader with an authoritative and mature tone. Liberty University takes pride in being a Christian College that empowers students on their journey to a higher education. The director of the spot (Caleb) was great to work with. He was able to bring out the edginess that the character needed. The pacing was crucial in achieving this.

The voice of Liberty University commercial

When in pursuit of becoming a top American male voice over talent, one must have an authentic vocal identity. A well thought-out and truthful TAG line can help brand a talents vocal identity. My tagline is “The Voice of Millennials-Cool, Urban and a College Sound.” Over the years, I have done many voice over projects for colleges and universities all throughout the united states, Liberty University’s recent campaign was very well received by faculty and students. So much so, they invited me back for future spots. Working on projects that encourage authenticity over “acting”, is a great experience to be a part of. It didn’t matter if I was a white or black voice actor, a young or old voice actor or an inexperienced one- at the end of the day, what got me this job was that I was able to use my voice and be myself. This is the key to success in voice overs. I will be forever grateful for this project as it has allowed me to further discover and harness my true vocal identity.

Work on discovering your authentic voice. It is your greatest asset and will serve you very well in your career. It may take many steps, deviations and failures to get there, but once discovered, your only goal should be to master your authenticity. This mastery will guide you in your learning and education of your art.

Audition with Me

True and Better by Dan Stevers was a “viral” modern Christian Church motion background video created in 2013. The voice over can best be described as: reflective, warm, calm, caring, passionate and real. It has been over 5 years since the release of this video and I still get church media clients who reference it. Many churches’ pay for digital rights and use the video during their service. True and Better launched my “worship voice over” career. Over the years, I have come to cherish this genre in audio/video production and appreciate its art.

Performing voice over for worship backgrounds can be challenging. Often they require a build in pace, energy and vocal “aggression.” Motion worship requires a voice actor to really connect with the gospel and to be able to share these biblical stories with love and purity. To prepare for these types of reads, I like to listen to the music bed the director is considering. The music helps guide the poetic cadence of each line and simplifies the transitions from one stanza to the next. I have done many Christian motion backgrounds and worship graphics over the years, each one is unique. Some videos are soft and story like, others are empowering and of “preacher” like energy. My favorite is a soft to loud build in energy and volume. The climax being at the very end, right before ending the piece softly and intimately.

True and Better is beautiful piece. I had the opportunity to hear it live in a mega church and it was magical. The words, by Dan Stevers, captured church member’s hearts and minds and lifted their spirits for Easter service. I loving doing voice overs for church and worship groups. It allows me to connect with my spiritual side. It allows me to share a message of hope and love. In the industry, I have become branded as the go to urban voiceover actor for worship media and church videos. With a poetic sound, I do my best to deliver the message carefully and elegantly- complementing the motion graphics and backgrounds.

I don’t take any job for granted. When I first started out in my career, I would audition for hours a day and never book a single job. I didn’t expect to, but I practiced with the intent to. I remember booking my first voice over job around 2013. It was for $172. It took me 1.5 years of auditioning to book 1 job. When I found out, I sat down in the offices of my corporate employer and shed some happy tears. That one job gave me hope. It made me believe in myself to a level that’s indescribable. It reminded me of the days my mom and sister would beg me not to quit my comfy corporate job for “acting” thus fueling my desire to continue pursuing my goals.

Voice of Nintendo Switch commercial

I’ve been poor most of my life. My father passed away when I was really young, so my mom was a single mother with, no education, immigrant from India and responsible for 3 children. She spoke no English. At times, I remember being so poor that we would have to share three .99 cent chicken sandwiches from Burger King amongst a family of 5 members. I only share this in hopes to shed some light on the humility I must try to seek every day. As I become more successful I have to recall these moments so I never take any moment for granted in my life. Although I played it, I was never able to afford my own Super Nintendo as a kid. I would see other kids playing with Nintendo games, such as Super Mario Brothers, and I would pretend I didn’t care. When I booked this Nintendo commercial, I went on E-bay and bought over 100 games and an old school Super Nintendo game console. I remember playing it for hours on the first night- I was almost 30 years old.

This national commercial for Nintendo has been one the highlights of my career. It has changed my perspective on what my abilities as a voice actor are. It has elevated my relationship with my agency and clients. The commercial is targeted towards teens and young adults. The voice of Nintendo needed to be: friendly, energetic, a gamer, natural, hip and full of life. In my experience with commercial voice over – this was a creative opportunity I had yet to explore. It has allowed me to elevate my perceived value in this industry in many professional aspects. Voicing for the most popular Nintendo games including Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

Audition with Me

I audition for a lot of University and College voice over commercials. As a voice over specialist based in Los Angeles, CA, it was imperative my millennial college voice demos reflect a “nonspecific geographical” sound. This custom voice over was for the University of Maryland (UMD). The director casted voice over talent from all around the country, including Los Angeles, and was looking for a millennial voice that was more than just “a voice over.” The Voice needed to be: real, smart, uplifting, leader like, and empowering. An articulate college voice that might sound like an engineering student. A positive male voice that reflected leadership and youth. When auditioning for this spot, I had to focus on perfecting my articulation. It needed to be conversational but not too casual/informal. The best direction was given by Gabriel (the client) – “Give me that big bright Kabir smile all the way through.”

A smile can go a long way in a voice over read. A smile can be heard by the listener, as much as it can be missed. But how do you make a smile sound real? That is something I worked on for many years- OFF the microphone. When working on voice over, our goal overall should be to sound authentic. Once you can master authenticity of self, a smile will sound as real as if the person was right next to you smiling the whole way through. Smiles are powerful and very effective. Smiles also have many dimensions. Some voice over reads might require more of a smirk and less of a smile. Likewise, some voice over reads might ask for “inside smile” and that’s a whole different fun variation to learn and express!

Voice of University of Maryland

“Smart, educated and articulate millennial university student” were the specs and directions for this voice over job. After seeing the final video, I was confident in my growth as a voice actor. I was able to flex my range, make vocal tweaks, and deliver a positive sounding voice over. I am grateful for doing many of the Universities internal corporate narration reads as well. The client (Gabriel) is a great writer and director and really inspired me to perform at my very best.

Find your smile in life. Find your happiness and remember that feeling when you’re in the booth and a smile is needed. Your clients will appreciate it once they can hear it sound authentic and real.

The rise of the explainer video! Marketing’s newest and most undervalued display of creative genius. I’ve done thousands of explainer videos for companies all across the world. Some of my explainer video clients include: GE, Nike, Western Union and Coke.  Explainer videos often ask for a voice actor that is articulate, fresh and has just the right amount of energy to a sustain a concise read. One my favorite explainer video projects to work on was done for The Rotary Club International. The voice needed to be soft, heartfelt, loving, caring and youthful. The topic was sensitive- the eradication of the Polio Virus. I quickly became attached to this piece as my sister suffers from its powerful force.

When clients search for voice actors for hire and voice over services online they often come across a full display of various ages, accents and races of talent. Technology in the online audio voice over industry has allowed for rapid business to business e-commerce. Freelance video producers can now hire voice actors online quickly and cost effectively. Explainer videos have become a mandatory tool for any business. There rapid growth has created a niche of voice actors and production companies. Explainer videos, when done right, provide a quick and efficient way to summarize content/messages to a targeted audience. Unlike traditional commercials that are often “selling” to their audience, explainer videos often just simply inform their audience. Thus, the voice actor for hire must be pleasant to listen to, guiding the listener through a 1-3-minute creative message.

Explainer video voice over talent

I’ve now done over a few hundred explainer videos in my career and I’ve come to realize they usually all have a few key traits. Explainer Videos: sound relatable, have a good consistent energy and are no longer than 5 minutes in length. Because of these traits, my approach to explainer videos is relatively the same. I try my best to establish a good pace and energy and then delivery a read that is bright and relatable. Explainer Videos give a voice actor a break from traditional hard-sell or oversell commercials. We get a chance to sound “human” again.

Audition with Me

Whenever I review auditions looking for voice actors, I narrow them down by: voice over rate, usage, genre and client. Professional voice over rates tend to vary depending on a few of these key factors. Sometimes, it’s a “give and take” for the right opportunity and/or client. When I come across worship media and Christian voice over castings, such as A Resurrection Story, I get a feeling of excitement and happiness inside I can’t quite describe. Worship motion media, especially Easter and Christian Christmas videos for church, hold a special place in my heart. In commercial voice over work I often find myself selling or promoting an item. In contrast, it’s nice to deliver a message of hope and faith sometimes.

Over the years of doing voice over videos for church and worship media graphics, I’ve explored many different voice over styles. A resurrection Story required a voice that was, soft, heartfelt, loving, warm, Christian like, genuine and real. The tone needed to sound “delicately uplifting” to a faithful church audience. Worship graphics and church worship backgrounds will guide the voice actor in his/her delivery. But, to deliver a read that sounds “real” and be the voice of that special Christmas Day Church Service, requires a feeling of true love. The kind of love that’s internal and appreciative of every aspect of life. The kind of love Christians from all over the world relate to Jesus Christ. Worship media projects, across the board, usually require a certain level of love and humanity to be reflected in the voice over. The church voice over cannot sound fake or too aggressive. “Subtlety with a gentle smile” was the key direction given to me by the writer when delivering this praise and worship voice over.

Christian worship voice actor

A voice over actor should reflect on their: cost, prices, rates, fees and services every year. A good practice is to establish voice over rates and voice over talent fees based on a full scope of what the project entails. With worship and Christian voice over videos, many church’s resell their media via www.worshiphousemedia.com. Thus, creating a continuous revenue stream for the end client. As a voice actor, establishing a “re-use” for church voice over services, is a good practice.

At the end of the day, when a church is looking for a voice over artist, I always do my best to work with the church’s budget and negotiate a fair rate. Projects that hold a special place in your heart are worthy of this consideration.

What is it about adventure that intrigues even the most hypnotized being? Whether it be from the hypnosis of: the 9-5 job, the mundane relationship or even the feeling one gets deep inside that ignites an “inner spark” every time we encounter something pleasantly spontaneous – we love us some fucking adventure! Pepsi wanted to provoke that feeling of adventure with a bright and youthful voice that would uplift the spirit and encourage the inner adventurer in all of us. The voice over needed to sound: energetic, millennial sounding, daring, genuine and adventurous. It could not come off sounding like a: famous voice over, celebrity voice over or artificial in any way.

I have an interesting vocal range and sound. If you only judged me based on my voice, without ever knowing me or seeing me, what race or culture would you hear? When I get more energetic and peppy, I tend to sound more high pitched. I also tend to have a different type of “swag” in my voice. I still sound cool, but not so “urban” cool. Ask any famous or celebrity  voice actor if they’ve developed a healthy “vocal range” and I’m sure they will give you some experience or story worthy of listening to.

I was born in India but raised in La Puente, CA. I developed a little bit of Hispanic “swag” as well as a little bit of African-American “swag.” This mix of cultures and races created a sound that is relatable to a racially diverse audience. Pepsi liked that sound for this specific English voice over spot. It had a nonspecific geographical accent or dialect, it was genuine and left us reminiscing of our youth. Overall, it sounded human. Sounding human allows for global reach. Sounding human allows for global acceptance and global creation.

The voice in the Pepsi commercial

If you want to discover your inner adventurer or just happen to get a random “itch” to step outside of your temporary hypnosis- try to reconnect with your “human” side by – being human again. Some things I’ve done to accomplish this include:

  • Driving down to skid row in Los Angeles, CA and serve the less fortunate
  • Committing to losing weight through dieting and exercise.
  • Taking a solo trip to Peru
  • Meditating and reading about: compassion, love and empathy.

I have and will continue to spend my life working on developing my: character, thoughts and knowledge. Through this journey I will make mistakes and hopefully learn from them. I feel like every day I get a chance at life is an adventure. And while on that adventure, a sip of Pepsi just might give us that break and remind us of how precious life can be.

There are various levels to any art we wish to master. At the basic, you must first be the apprentice before you can become the master. Prior to booking this Quicksilver voice over commercial, I never officially felt like “Kabir Singh the Voice Over Guy.” This job was my first big industry/agency job. After completing it successfully, I finally felt like a real apprentice in pursuit of Mastery. It motivated me, humbled me and taught me many lessons.

There are many young English male voice artists out there. Many of which would have been a nice fit for this Quicksilver commercial. However, the director was looking for one specific quality- a poet. Why a poet? What was it about being a poet, that would be reflected in the voice? Beyond being: inspirational, energetic, youthful, urban and appealing to a surfing crowd, the voice over needed to sound poetic overall.

The voice of Quicksilver commercial

I have been writing poetry since I was a teen. I used poetry to express my inner most precious thoughts and feelings. Poetry was my only true friend. As I matured and got older, I went from writing poetry to performing poetry (spoken word). Local open mic spots in Los Angeles, California- would allow me to practice my poetic expression. When I started voice over, I quickly become aware of my Cadence. You see, poets have a specific cadence. They have a specific tempo and flavor. It’s no longer about being just a conversational voice over, it’s about being a poetic and inspiring voice over. Kabir Singh “the poet” had to be priority, not Kabir Singh “the voice over guy.”

I am forever grateful for this job. It launched my career, my relationships, my education and my hunger for success. I’m also very grateful for Bill Holmes (www.voiceoverdoctor.com). Bill Holmes helped me in ways I could never repay him back. He mentored me, educated me, guided me, and helped me get this job. His teachings in voice over are unpresented. He is a true master and I will always be grateful.

I believe everyone has a little bit of poet in them. Expressing that poet can be a challenge, but it only requires a bit of connecting with your inner self – your thoughts, feelings and observations. For me, every voice over project has some level of poetry to it. The words are poetry. The poetry can be angry, happy, sad, or even funny. How you express that poetry is where the uniqueness and art comes in. So, the next time you catch yourself speaking, see if you can spot a little bit of that poetry and cadence within you. You will be surprised at how much it can teach you about yourself.

This is a game for hustlers. A freelancer is, in his/her most raw state, a straight up hustler. A hustler in the most positive light. As a freelance voice over actor, I must constantly remind myself that those looking for voice actors are also, themselves, freelancers. That commonality is a crucial bond often overlooked during times of passionate negotiations. I certainly can recall many times I have overlooked this commonality. Voice Actors are needed just as much as Producers/Directors/Editors are needed. Collaboration reigns supreme.

I have done voice over projects for many big named companies and often times, voice over rates and prices require detailed negotiations. As professional voice over talents, we have to tread that fine line between value and humility. How do we increase our perceived value while still remaining humble and appreciative of our opportunities? Having Mutual Respect between Client and Talent is often the answer. I respect my clients. I respect their budgets. I respect their usage needs. I respect their turnaround times. When a client comes to me seeking a quote for a project, I ask them a few detailed questions regarding: editing needs, usage, client and project details etc. After going through my “process” I provide a quote and wait for approval. 90% of the time, clients consider my rate fair and accept. Over the years, I have simplified my “process” so it fosters and creates: mutual respect, humility and value. I don’t ask for more than the market can bare. I also don’t ask so little that I drive down the value and going market rate. This is very important. Regardless of where you are in your career, you should always seek to raise your rates annually so you are keeping quality standards in the market. Supply and demand are key. My minimum studio fee has tripled since I started doing voice overs. As I grow as an actor and gain more experience, this upward trend will respectfully continue.

Voice over rates, fees and prices

Those looking for voice talent will come across a plethora of options. From talent on Pay-To-Play sites (Fiverr, Voices.Com, Voice123) to vast talent rosters being represented by local/regional/national agents. Given this, a talent must always keep in mind his/her competition. What are they charging? Why are they being paid what they charge? What “value added” services are they offering as part of their quote?

Even though voice over costs have fallen over the years, you always want to remain competitive in the marketplace. With the rapid advancement in technology, P2P sites, and overall talent supply- the industry has been hit hard. However, adaptability to this new market has shown great results. One of my mentors, J. Michael Collins, has transitioned very successfully into becoming a master demo producer and creator to serve this new supply of talent. The point being that even though talent rates have fallen, there are still many opportunities available. Whether your desire is to be a voice over talent, demo producer, director or agent- the industry is waiting for young hustlers to move it forward.

So as you grow in your career, strive to be competitive. Strive to better the industry and strive to better yourself and the relationships with those whom you do business with.

One of my favorite books is “Shoe Dog” by Phil Knight. Described as “A memoir by the creator of NIKE,” the story of this iconic company is one that is greatly admired and appreciated. We’ve all heard of the name and can recognize the infamous logo, but, what about “The Voice of Nike?” Nike doesn’t really have a specific voice actor that can be titled as being the official Voice of Nike. However, they do have a certain creative style and swagger about their national advertising campaigns that consistently seek out voice actors under the same “specs” in the audition.

I’ve worked on many Nike projects, from Internal presentations to national ads. Each one is unique. Nike loves to motivate and inspire the “inner athlete” in all of us. Their messages are, in the end, boiled down to – just doing it. Getting out of your comfort zone and challenging yourself to reach your inner greatness. Nike Unlocks was Nike’s way of servicing that great athlete. By introducing a new savvy way for those motivated athletes to customize and re-up on their fresh new gear. To accomplish this, Nike needed a voice that could motivate and convince these already motivated individuals to sign up and use this service. The direction given to me by the director and production team was simple- “stay real and stay cool.”

Nike voice over artist

Voice acting is acting and acting can be real and cool. Authenticity is the key. Nike prides itself on its authenticity. It’s raw nature. To be the voice of Nike, in a national advertising campaign, the voice actor needed to appeal to a highly authentic fan base. The voice actor needed to bring energy and smile without getting cheesy. Subtly works hand in hand with authenticity.

Will I ever be the official voice of Nike? It can only be a sweet dream. But, each opportunity I get to motivate the inner athlete in myself and others- I welcome with open arms. Nike has always motivated me to get out of my comfort zone and work on myself. As a voice actor, I can only live by the infamous tag line that motivates us all- Just Do It!
