Most University voice over projects require one thing in common – pride. The voice must reflect a sense and feeling of pride. Not arrogance and not ego. Just an authentic voice of pride for the community, history, and alumni of the school. The Temple University voiceover project had a lot of pride in it. Their infamous symbol is the owl. Everything from the mascot to their slogan is structured around this owl- Stella. The voice over producers of the project wanted to feel pride and authenticity but also the spirit of a young millennial student voice. Often times producers will let a voice over talent know what their target demographic is and when they first hear your voice in the audition they already have a direction in mind.

The Temple University College voice, according to the producers, had to be relatable to a multicultural audience. What is it about the voice that reflects a multicultural audience? Sometimes it’s just the informality of it. A lot of times multicultural societies, such as the ones I grew up in, have speech patterns that are informal. Lots of contractions and mumbled slang are used. When I approached the microphone during session I just had to be my authentic self and remember my informal self-bit more. But, a voice actor should not get it confused– informal does not mean disrespectful or immature. Informal just means a little bit looser. As a voice talent, it is our job to dance on the line of formality and informality while delivering structured copy. Lucky for me, it’s very easy to relate to college students because I’m not too far from being one.

In most commercial voiceover projects authenticity is required. A voice actor or actress must be authentic within their given boundaries. As the Temple University voiceover hired for this spot, I reflected on my experience as a prideful college student not too long ago. The sense of pride that only builds through experience. Once I was able to harness the feeling that resembled what I was searching for and matched what the producers envisioned– then I would practice the cadence and rhythm of the script. I remember for this voiceover project timing was crucial because they had to alter the copy as it was too long to begin with. They wanted a 60 second voice over commercial, but head enough words for a two-minute commercial. As a Voice actor adjusting our pace is crucial but we are limited within our scope. Once the voice acting portion of the script was finalized, the direction and collaboration just came naturally.

The Temple University voiceover project was one of those projects that helped me discover and harness one of my “signatures voices”- the college voice sound. I would market my voice as the millennial voice, college voice, University voice, student pride voice, and authentic Voice for many years to come.

Audition with Me

I audition for a lot of University and College voice over commercials. As a voice over specialist based in Los Angeles, CA, it was imperative my millennial college voice demos reflect a “nonspecific geographical” sound. This custom voice over was for the University of Maryland (UMD). The director casted voice over talent from all around the country, including Los Angeles, and was looking for a millennial voice that was more than just “a voice over.” The Voice needed to be: real, smart, uplifting, leader like, and empowering. An articulate college voice that might sound like an engineering student. A positive male voice that reflected leadership and youth. When auditioning for this spot, I had to focus on perfecting my articulation. It needed to be conversational but not too casual/informal. The best direction was given by Gabriel (the client) – “Give me that big bright Kabir smile all the way through.”

A smile can go a long way in a voice over read. A smile can be heard by the listener, as much as it can be missed. But how do you make a smile sound real? That is something I worked on for many years- OFF the microphone. When working on voice over, our goal overall should be to sound authentic. Once you can master authenticity of self, a smile will sound as real as if the person was right next to you smiling the whole way through. Smiles are powerful and very effective. Smiles also have many dimensions. Some voice over reads might require more of a smirk and less of a smile. Likewise, some voice over reads might ask for “inside smile” and that’s a whole different fun variation to learn and express!

Voice of University of Maryland

“Smart, educated and articulate millennial university student” were the specs and directions for this voice over job. After seeing the final video, I was confident in my growth as a voice actor. I was able to flex my range, make vocal tweaks, and deliver a positive sounding voice over. I am grateful for doing many of the Universities internal corporate narration reads as well. The client (Gabriel) is a great writer and director and really inspired me to perform at my very best.

Find your smile in life. Find your happiness and remember that feeling when you’re in the booth and a smile is needed. Your clients will appreciate it once they can hear it sound authentic and real.

College voice over commercials seem to all have one goal- to inspire. Inspire their current students, faculty and future graduates. That inspiration can come in various digital forms, but as a professional voice actor my job is to create that inspiration through the art of spoken word. University voice over projects require a sense of pride and embellishment of truth. The pride the college has of its rich history and culture and the truth it wishes to engrain in the minds of its prospective audience. A hopeful truth that will inspire students to discover who they are and what they wish to become. Liberty University is a very prestigious school with a prideful message and marketing campaign. The director and producers of the spot specifically wanted the Liberty University voice over to sound: raw, real, and motivational. They didn’t just want another college voice. They wanted a leader. They university voice had to empower his/her listeners and lead them to believe in the mission of the college.

As a professional university voice over artist I have to respect the mission the university outlines. Respect its purpose and understand its unique voice. Each education voice over piece is unique in its delivery. Some college voice over projects require a fast paced cadence with a powerful delivery. While other university voice over projects require a more pensive and intimate approach. As an experienced college voice over talent, I can naturally switch back and forth or blend these approaches when in front of the microphone. Especially when I am given a voice over script that builds in energy and inflection. Liberty University’s approach to their university voice over project was: urban, empowering and real.

The more colleges and universities create visual displays of their brand mission and messages the quicker they will be able to win the hearts and minds of our youth. But, there is a caveat. It must be real. It must be authentic. It must be relatable. Everything from the voice to the music- it must all service not only what’s now, but what’s 5 years from now. My job as a college voice over artist is to combine my heart and spirit with that of the universities. This Liberty University voice over project was a great experience in blending spirits and purpose. A prestigious school with a rich academic history and a powerful spiritual alumni network mixed with a motivated young man from the streets of Los Angeles, California- the combination is raw, gritty and real.
